Seven Quick Takes - Feast of St. Irenaeus

1.  Suppose your teenagers are not home, and it's "family movie night."  Well, most of you don't have teenagers, so I imagine choosing a movie for "family movie night" is a little different at your house.

I brought home The Terminator the other day.  I thought it would be right up Edmund's alley, robots, warfare, epic battles, but I haven't seen it in twenty years or so.  Yeah, no.  Big no.  Too much fornication and eff words, as I learned on www.commonsensemedia.org.

Common Sense Media has reviews by parents and kids, of books and movies and videogames and probably other stuff.  They also have lists that you can search.  By searching the family friendly movie list for ages 10 and up, I found this.

Released in 1996, Dragonheart is an adventure-fantasy film starring Dennis Quaid, and Sean Connery as the voice of the dragon.  Dragonheart reminds me of Willow and Kevin Costner's Robin Hood.

The bad guy is played by the same guy who plays Professor Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter movies, which is just more evidence that there are only 80 British actors in existence who star in everything.

I was pretty busy in 1996 with my colicky first-born and without a car or a tv, so it's no wonder that I never heard of or saw this movie.

It's not great theater, but it's a decent story with some good characters, trying to be good and honorable.  Edmund liked it.  As mature as he is, he was swinging around  a plastic sword by the end.

2.  Have you liked Mentalfloss on Facebook yet?  Don't you need more geeky stuff in your newsfeed?

I love their quirky articles like this one:  The Time Napoleon Was Attacked By Rabbits.

I would so rather read 50 things like that than anything on Drudge Report.

3.

Similar to Mentalfloss, I also greatly enjoy Buzzfeed.  Check out their list of 13 P.G. Wodehouse Quotes Guaranteed to Make Your Day Better.  (Thank you Peggy.  It definitely made my day better.)

4.  If you haven't seen the old Jeeves and Wooster shows, you've got a lot of hilarious tv to watch before Downton comes back.  There are only 2 or 3 filming locations for Brits.  Highclere Castle is Downton Abbey is Totleigh Towers.

Yes, that is Dr. House as Bertie Wooster.  I'll have to re-watch these to see how many former Dr. Who stars and Harry Potter stars were in Jeeves and Wooster.  (Because there are only 80 British actors, right Cari? BTW:  Cari is hosting a hugely successful fundraiser for Dwija that ends this Sunday.)

5.  Cracked.com is another time waster/newsfeed filler.  Fr. Barron Superfan, Brandon Vogt linked to the Cracked article about Five Priests Who Turned Badass When Things Got Critical.

I got all excited when I saw their 5 Nuns Who Could Kick Your Ass, but the article is lame and the pictures are worse.  Don't bother.  I'm going to write a better one, so leave me your ass kicking nun suggestions in the combox.  Thanks!

That is a chick driving on a wall with a LION in the sidecar.

My favorite Cracked article of all time will always be 15 Old Photographs That Prove the World Used to Be Insane.  Also Guaranteed to make your day better.

6.  Last bit of fluff of the week:  The Meta Picture.  At least once a day, The Meta Picture has something that makes me smile like You're Never to Old to be a Wizard or My Cat is Really Special.

7.  Okay, Mom.  That should kill at least an hour of your recovery time.  More if you actually watch Dragonheart and/or Jeeves and Wooster.  If I were you, I'd go with Jeeves.

Go see Jen for more quick takes and enjoy your weekend!
