WWRW: Lucy Cousins and Clyde Robert Bulla

Showing up late with this week's book selections and link-up.

The garbage man gets an extra day after a holiday weekend, so that's my excuse too.  Mmmkay?

Jill cannot get enough of fairy tales and folk tales these days.  Yummy: Eight Favorite Fairy Tales by Lucy Cousins is a delightful if gory selection.

Look at how happy Grandmother and Little Red are!
Yes, the Big Bad Wolf gets his head chopped off by the huntsman, yes, all of Henny Penny's friends (Ducky Lucky, Goosey Poosey, Turkey Lurkey, and Cocky Locky) get eaten by another wolf.  I believe these are accurate re-tellings.  Fairy tales are not for the faint of heart.

We picked up some Lucy Cousins picture books too.  Maisy Goes on VacationMaisy, Charley, and the Wobbly Tooth, and Maisy Goes to Preschool are all precious little stories about every day things.

The dentist in this book is Dr. Biteright.  I wouldn't be surprised if that what Jill calls our dentist from now on.
Jill liked the bright images and realistic tasks (going potty, washing hands, etc.).  I liked the simple text and the reasonable (short) length.

Here at St. Jude's School for Kids Who Want to Read Good and Do Other Things Good Too, we finished Story of the World Volume 1 some weeks ago.   I told Edmund we were finished with history, and he exclaimed, "But we didn't do VIKINGS!  You SAID we would do VIKINGS!"

Yes, I did, because my mother-in-law wants to take us to this Real Full Size Replica of a Viking Ship that is not too far from here.

We are going to do one.more.lapbook, this time about Vikings.  I use the Homeschool Share website for most of our lapbooks (for Free!), and the creator of the Viking lapbook requires the book, Viking Adventure by Clyde Robert Bulla.

I was familiar with some of Bulla's work from the Battle of the Books program that I helped with in previous years.

His historical fictional is well-told in an easy-to-read format.  Translation:  Edmund loves his books.

Edmund tore through Viking Adventure in just a few days.  My heart is so happy when I see him engaged in a book.  SPOILER:  Today, he ran into the living room and said, "Halfred killed Gorm!"  I acted totally interested as he went on and on

and on.

We read The Sword in the Tree (Trophy Chapter Book) for Battle of the Books last year, so next we are getting Pirate's Promise and The Secret Valley (Trophy Chapter Book) (about the Gold Rush).

Edmund is off to a good start for the library's summer reading program!

  1. Oh we love our Lucy Cousins! Her lift-the-flap books are pretty fabulous too, although hard to find in the US... We've had a lot of luck used :) One of my favorite memories of a young John Paul is when he was "reading" one of the books to himself and lifted a flap to show the squirrel, "Hewwo, Cyril!" and then lifted the flap for the alligator, "Hewwo, Methodius!" I'm pretty sure he wasn't even two, it was incredible!

  2. Oh, there are some fun ones here! We'll have to add some of these to our list! My husband is currently reading our sons (4 and 6) The Adventures of the Black Hand Gang, which seems to be out of print. He must have saved it from his childhood. Do you do this every Wednesday? I will have to stop by again!

  3. I had to do a double take with the wolf loosing his head. You are so right in saying fairy tales are not for the faint of heart...I remember when I first heard the original sotry line/ending of 'The Little Mermaid'...so devastating.

  4. Vikings! I love Vikings, ever since my Viking Lit class in college. I may have to check out that book :)

  6. I love Lucy Cousins...and my kids are...meh. But I still have Nora! And do any of those Viking books tell how the Vikings made it to Illinois? Because I missed that! ;)
