Madeleine L'Engle

In third grade, my teacher read A Wrinkle in Time aloud to our class. I look back on that moment with such clarity. That was my first conscious experience beyond picture books and Bobbsey Twins, and I loved it. I have read nearly all of L'Engle's books since then. I love the way she wraps her faith around every subject she deals with, from the environment to conformity to metaphysics and time travel. I wish I had written to her, just once, to tell her what worlds I have explored through her initial invitation. But I suppose she probably already knows.

L'Engle's book A House Like a Lotus is an adult book often found in juvenile fiction departments. This book is decent, but is largely about a teen girl discovering that her role model is a lesbian. Not recommended for youth.
