My go-to time-waster, Mentalfloss, took me on a fun jaunt down memory lane this week. I, of course, immediately messaged my college besties and they had some hilarious additions to this list of 11 Fashions the Kids Were Wearing in 1993.

Notably absent from this list were: calico jumpsuits/clownpants and boxers as girl shorts.
In the fall of 1992, while on my Rome semester, I went running* through the small town of Vitinia, where the UD Rome campus was located for awhile. I got a lot of weird looks from the locals. I remember thinking, "They must never see women running for exercise in this medieval town." It never occurred to me that my Winnie-the-Pooh and Tigger Too neon boxer shorts might be attracting attention.
*To my recollection, this is the one and only time I have ever "went running."

One friend-who-shall-not-be-named, shared her own European fashion faux pas:
Ha! I had the cutest body suit I bought in Paris to wear on the plane home from Europe. FYI do NOT wear a body suit with your mom jeans on a long plane ride. Using those tiny restrooms was an Olympic feat!Let that be a lesson to you kids! *wagging finger* No Parisian bodysuits on overseas flights!
3. A few mom have asked me about where to buy nice clothes for tweens and teens. I think my teens always look good, probably because I am their mother. However, I try to stay all up in their business about their clothes. Good-looking trendy not trashy dress clothes require a little more reconnaissance than jeans and tees.
There are few places that I've found to be fairly reliable.
4. Old Navy

A niece/cousin (it's complicated) of mine who is in 7th grade wore this adorable frock to picture day yesterday. It's at Old Navy RIGHT NOW! She wears it in an extra-small, the medium fits me.
I didn't get it, Therese! So have no fear that you're going to show up to Mass in the same outfit as your 40 year-old aunt/cousin. (I told you it was complicated.)
I ended up with two of these skirts for Susan and Lucy (and Me) to share.
My Old Navy only had them in navy and white, but I see online that there is a red one too! Tempting....
5. LOFT
I can nearly always find lovely special occasion dresses at LOFT. Don't be fooled by the pictures online. Just like the image above, sometimes what looks to be shorty-short on a digital model is quite nice on a real flesh and blood person. Plus, their petites section is just as trendy. My friend, Kathy, gave me that tip when our girls' were in middle school.
Here are a couple of the items my girls have gotten at LOFT this year.

Curvy cuts are a whole different endangered species. LOFT Julie fit is good, and Eddie Bauer has some great jeans that didn't make my 16 year old feel like a mom. Her actual words were, "These are the only jeans I've ever worn that fit in the hips and the waist at the same time." They weren't cheap though.
6. Gosh, I want to go shopping now.
7. Tons of music nerds were posting a YouTube clip of a new song on Facebook, people who make music for a living, and people who go to Bonnaroo. Serious music lovers.

I am working on convincing Jill that Brandi Carlile and Priscilla Ahn are Disney princesses to save my sanity.
When I saw my Parisian bodysuit wearing friend link to that new song, I caved.

I showed that LOFT dress to Sunshine the other day as an example of how to wear horizontal stripes! I might have to get it for her now. And um... complicated as in... "my family's from the highest hills of Appalachia" complicated?

Yay for Therese's dress! And for the record, I only wore Monica's skirt to Mass once, when I knew she wouldn't be there. And I'm not 40...yet... lol. Also agree that Junior departments are worthless. And Ben listened to that song 3 or 4 times this am.... hahaha.It's our new dish-doing song. Fish go blub.

ReplyDeleteomg, i could not stop laughing at #1. I once bought a similar outfit and well, if that slim model looks ridiculous, you can imagine what a short, chubby mexican girl looked like in it. Thankfully it never left my closet but two decades later my family will still bring up the time I bought those that floral muumuu jumpsuit. LOL!!
