What February 2nd Means to Me

Yesterday was February 2nd. For Americans and University of Dallas alums, February 2nd means Groundhog Day. For Catholics, February 2nd is Candlemas. For me, February 2nd is the anniversary of the day I joined the universal Sisterhood of women who have lost a child.

The Sisterhood is bigger than you might think. Nearly every woman I know is a member. I think that She is our spokesperson.


I've wrestled with posting about this topic all week. I don't want to sound maudlin. I have a difficulty with too much emotion in the public setting, comes with my German heritage I think.

Nevertheless, I want to acknowledge the Sisterhood. You were there when I needed you.

Our little one has a plot in the same section of Queen of Heaven cemetery with the children who perished in the Our Lady of Angels fire. Lots of angels in that section. Lots of women joined the Sisterhood that day.

Our little one was with us only a short time. We announced our pregnancy on Obama's Inauguration Day. We wanted to celebrate life on that day especially. It was a wonderful day.
